Welcome message from the ISU President

Dear Skating Friends,

On behalf of the International Skating Union, it is a great pleasure for me to extend a warm welcome to all of you at the 2021 ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating in Hungary.

This major event in Debrecen will also serve as a Qualifying Competition for the Olympic Winter Games 2022. We will see a spectacle full of exciting performances of the world’s best skaters. I wish everybody a very joyful and memorable experience.

The ISU would like to thank the Hungarian National Skating Federation. Compliments go to the Organizing Committee, the officials and the many volunteers who have worked extra hard given the COVID-19 pandemic to make this World Cup a success. I also extend my gratitude to the media and the sponsors for their interest and contribution to the promotion and development of Short Track.

Last but not least, I wish the Skaters a great deal of success. Let us enjoy their impressive performances and cheer for everyone!

Participation in the Beijing Winter Olympics is at stake

Dear Sports-friends,

Our short track speed skaters are facing a critical event again: during the four stages of the ISU World Cup Short Track 2021, the leaders of the sport will compete on ice to earn Olympic quotas. It is a great pleasure for me that, after 2017, Hungary will host again one of the competition stages. Therefore we can see world-class speed skaters and support the Hungarian team from 18 to 21 November, 2021 in Debrecen’s renovated Főnix Arena.

In 2018, the men's relay team consisting of Shaolin Sándor Liu, Shaoang Liu, Csaba Burján and Viktor Knoch won Hungary's first Winter Olympic gold medal in PyeongChang. This historic success has been followed by many outstanding achievements; let us recall the ISU World Short Track Championships 2021 in Dordrecht, which was the most successful World Championship for Hungary ever with the three gold and three silver medals won.

Debrecen will provide a decent environment for the Hungarian round of the World Cup qualifiers, ensuring excellent infrastructure for the organisation of international sports events. One key element is the recently renovated Főnix Arena, which offers a modernised engineering and security system to the athletes, teams and visitors of the competition.

In recent years, we Hungarians have proved that we belong to the leaders in this sport, so let us enjoy the fantastic achievements and support together the Hungarian skating team!

Lajos Kósa

President of the Hungarian National Skating Association

Dear Reader,

Dear Sports-friends,

Welcome to our city that is to host the third stage of the ISU World Cup Short Track 2021 series from 18 to 21 November 2021. I am very pleased that the International Skating Union has selected Debrecen as the venue for this prestigious sport event, which is especially important for both Hungarian and foreign teams, as it will give a chance to win quotas for next February's Beijing Olympics. I am certain that we will have numerous memorable moments during the competition in the recently renovated Főnix Arena.

This sport is of strategic importance in the life of Debrecen, and as a result, many sports facilities have been built in the city in the past two decades. The recently renovated Főnix Arena belongs to the most important ones: in addition to the complete replacement of the lighting system, the civil engineering, IT and security systems, among others, have also been modernised. Similar investments ensure the adequacy of the venue for prestigious international sports events, thus promoting the joy of sports, as well as a healthier lifestyle among the people of Debrecen.

I wish all the participants of the World Cup a noble competition, and the fans of the sport an exciting and joyful supporting experience in our city. I also hope to see you again in Debrecen in the future!

László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen
